The first Monday in May has been dedicated to the Met Gala since 1948, a fundraising event that kicks off the Costumer Institute’s new exhibitions. It’s the “Super Bowl of fashion”, according to André Leon Talley and each year we eagerly await to see what OTT looks make it down the carpet.
This year’s theme was ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ so we were expecting plenty of glitter, sequins and drama – and that’s exactly what we got. We’ve picked our favourite
extravagant looks where the hair and beauty stood out head and shoulders above the rest.
Lady Gaga
This icon is back on the red carpet with not one, not two but three outfit changes! We just need a minute to appreciate those lashes! The true definition of pretty in pink.
Zendaya
Belle of the ball, this was a true fairytale moment. Perfectly coiffed hair with a Disney princess glow perfectly compliments her light up dress. To top it all off, Zendaya even left a glass slipper on the steps… bibbidi bobbidi boo-tiful!
Kim Kardashian
We all know the saying ‘Dripping in diamonds,’ well Kim K brought it to life on the red carpet. Her wet look glam included crystal water droplets, oil-slicked skin and glossy hair – perfection.
Sophie Turner
Bold in blue, Sophie isn’t playing any games here. This night sky coloured smokey cat eye is everything we wanted to see from the new bride, perfectly complemented by streaks of silver glitter in her slicked back hair – you can’t do camp without glitter – right?
Billy Porter
Arriving a la Cleopatra, adorned in glistening gold, carried in on a bed by six topless men wins Billy a top spot on the best entrance list, second to Gaga’s red carpet show ft four outfits. To-die-for eye makeup, that dramatic headpiece, those 10 foot wings and a cat suit – all dripping in gold; if there was ever a time to scream ‘Yas Queen’ it would be now.
Naomi Campbell
Radiant skin, the perfect pout and that delicate smokey eye – there’s a reason Naomi is a catwalk queen. Simple but classic, she always delivers. Need we say more?
Lily Collins
Lilly gives us swinging sixties meets RuPaul. This look is all about volume – big lashes, big brows and BIG hair. The chunky Alice band and floral hair pins elevate this look to new heights – and that takes some doing! But our favourite part? That perfectly precise eyeliner.
Ezra Miller
Talk about an optical illusion, this look really messes with your eyes! The level of craftsmanship and detail in this painting is incredible, it’s a true piece of art and belongs at the Met Gala – it is an art museum after all!
That’s it for another year! We absolutely love the creativity and passion the Met Gala involves, it’s the ultimate celebration of art, fashion and beauty that creates one of a kind looks, some quite rightly go down in fashion history. We already can’t wait for next year!
