Thankfully, dyeing your hair at home has never been easier. In the old days, it could be fraught with danger and there were lots of horror stories of hair dyeing gone wrong. Thanks to hair dye technology always moving forward, these days things are much, much safer and those of us who dye their hair on a regular basis do so safely and without incident the vast majority of the time. However, it always pays to be careful and do things right so check out our fantastic hair dyeing tips.
What is the natural colour of your own hair?
The very basis of successfully dyeing your hair is to first know what your exact natural hair colour is. Your natural hair colour determines where to start when choosing your desired shade. That means a natural blond will be able to take on different shades to someone who has darker shades of blonde.
Are you being realistic?
Lets face it, if you are going for a dramatic hair colour transformation, you are almost certainly best getting it done at a professional salon. The bigger the change that you attempt the more likely the results will either be disappointing or will go wrong. If you are going for more of a subtle shift of tones however, this is much easier to do successfully.
Have you thought about a wig?
No, not to wear permanently! Trying on a wig with the shade that you desire is the perfect way of seeing if that desired colour will actually suit you. If you are planning a dramatic change (i.e. more than three shades lighter or darker than your natural colour) then it really is worth trying to do if you can. You can save yourself a lot of time, hassle and heartache if that colour really does not sit well with you.
Buy more hair dye than you need
Imagine if you were dyeing your hair and it was all going really well and then…. You run out. This is something you really do not want happening so make sure you always buy an extra box just in case. It’s always best to have too much than too little.
Find the brand that works for you
This really is just a case of trial and error. We only stock hair dyes that are renowned as being the best on the market so you should start with brands such as the Color Wow range or Nutri Color Creme. If you’re after something a little more striking and dramatic, then we highly recommend Crazy Colour hair dyes.
Always buy a shade lighter than what you want
This is something that nearly all of the world’s top colourists agree on. The fact is that hair dye nearly always comes out darker than the image on the box. Buying a lighter shade than your desired colour should solve this. It is easier to ramp up a colour’s intensity than it is to tone it down
