There’s no doubt about it, having a fabulous tan enhances your appearance on so many levels. With the increasing awareness of the risks of too much sun or sunbed use, more and more people are turning to self-tanning products. Better than they ever have been, they are a really effective way of giving yourself a safe and great looking tan. Here’s some fabulous tips to help you self-tan like a pro.
Pick the right product
There are lots of different products out there all promising to give you that amazing golden tan. However, the fact is that many of these products aren’t very good, either because they don’t actually work or because they may leave streaky stains or be overly greasy to apply. Thankfully, we’ve done the hard work for you and every tanning product we sell you can rest assured is a quality product that you can rely on.
Plan ahead
Effective tanning like a pro is all about preparation. Most self tanning lotions, sprays, creams and mousses take six to eight hours to develop and require you to avoid water and sweating during that period. Therefore, you need to plan ahead carefully to ensure that you can comply with all these conditions. Failure to do so will mean your tan not being as good as it could be.
Exfoliate
It is crucial that before applying self tanner, you exfoliate your skin fully. This will ensure that any old skin cells are removed from the surface of the skin. This will allow your skin to soak up the self-tanner more effectively and more evenly which will make it look so much better. As the tan starts to fade, it will fade evenly too.
Shave
You don’t want unsightly hairs getting in the way of your new fantastic tan, so shave immediately before applying your self-tanner. If you fail to do so and then shave a few days later, this will strip away the colour of the tan and lessen its effectiveness.
Moisturize
Making sure your skin is hydrated is extremely important before applying your self-tanner. You should moisturize everywhere you are going to apply self tan, especially the dryer areas of your body such as your feet, knees, ankles, hands, wrists and elbows. Always use a good moisturizer as the more moisturized your skin, the better your tan will look.
Apply
You should always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines when applying your self-tan. Our general advice though is to always apply it in a cool dry place in front of a full length mirror. One place you certainly shouldn’t apply it is in the bathroom after a shower or bath as the steam is not conducive to easy and consistent application.
Removal
If you want to get rid of your tan fast, whether it’s because you want a more paler look or you’re just not applied it as well as you could then don’t worry as it is really easy. Start by showering or sitting in a hot bath and exfoliating your skin. Then, gently apply some lemon juice on cotton pads and apply to your skin or use baby wipes. Both of these are surprisingly effective.
