Whichever way you look at it, spring is a mixed-up sort of season – It’s hot then it’s cold, “Sun! Yes!” then “Rain! Noo!” – so whether you’re in or you’re out, you like hair up or hair down, these are our favourite spring-ready hairstyles whatever the weather. And, no, they’re not all as Katy Perry-inspired as we may have led you to believe (although edgy, punk and rock chic are important buzzwords…).
Wet Look
Designers are always looking for ways to toughen up spring’s pretty pastels and flouncy florals and this season punky, dishevelled-looking hair was the method a la mode. For the ultimate DGAF-look, it’s time to head out like you just walked out of the shower. Slicked-back, wet-look hair was all over the SS16 runways and looks both edgy and chic simultaneously. To get the look, run a wet-look pomade through your hair leaving it looking sleek and shiny. Or… just don’t take an umbrella to work. Good news for rainy days.
Pony
We know we go on about the humble ponytail a lot but it’s quick, easy and perfectly pretty for spring. Ponytails can take whatever the weather throws at them too; if it’s windy your hair stays put, if it’s rainy you can just slick your mane back into an even more ultra-sophisticated style. Plus it’s super low maintenance; all you need is a Kodo Bobble and you’re good to go.
Braids
Another pretty hairstyle that’s ideal for spring’s feminine and dainty vibes, braids are ideal for unpredictable weather. Keep your locks neat with french plaits, milkmaid braids or fishtail styles – the more complicated and intricate the better this season. Then simply spritz with a strong hold hairspray and your plaits will stay put whatever the weatherman says.
Mini-Fringe
Bangs are big this season, thanks in no small part to the huge seventies trend that’s everywhere we look. While lots of our favourite celebs are rocking long eyelash-sweeping fringes, this isn’t always the best style when wind, rain or suddenly roasting sunshine can leave bangs sticking out every which way (or just stuck firmly to our foreheads). For a more spring-friendly take, ‘edgy’ is the keyword once more as punky short fringes take over. The shorter and the messier your fringe the better!
Pastel
Pastels are always everywhere during springtime but this season’s coolest way to wear them is in your hair. Pastel pinks, baby blues, floral lilacs and nature-inspired pale sage greens and greys all look really hot right now; check out Directions and Crazy Colour for some of our favourite shades.
Buzzcut
Would you call yourself a dedicated follower of fashion? How brave are you feeling? For those of you who really want a whole new look for spring, soft buzzcuts are the hottest way to wear your hair this season. Edgy, low maintenance and pretty much perfect for all weathers, the buzzcut is the buzzword you should have on your lips when you next visit your hairdresser. Of course you could also DIY too…
My favourite look to emerge from 2016 has been the bob. It is so versatile and can suit any face shape as there are so many variations of it. The long sleek bob, the bob with a fringe, the choppy short bob – what ever your hair type, face shape and overall style – there is a type of bob for you.
