As any true beauty fan knows, the new year doesn’t really start until the new Spring/Summer season. That’s not to say it isn’t important to be prepared though so get ready for your new year in beauty with our look at the top trends for SS16 and how to achieve them.
The Complexion
The trend for the natural look is still going strong this year but 2016’s complexion allows for more coverage than last year’s barely-there tinted moisturisers and BB creams (great news for the 99% of us who don’t naturally have model-flawless skin!). The focus is on a smooth, radiant look and to nail this youthful effect you need to be thinking light, light, light. Grab a glowy foundation like Max Factor’s Miracle Touch Foundation, banish dark circles and blemishes with a light-diffusing concealer, and top off with a beautiful highlighting powder to get that perfect dewy finish.
The Eyes
While brightly-coloured lips have been taking a lot of the focus in recent years, eyes are making a bit of a comeback this Spring/Summer. Firstly, fans of the nineties will be overjoyed to hear that blue eyes are back in a big way. We’re not talking naturally blue peepers, we’re talking blue eyeshadow, blue eyeliner, and even blue mascara. You can go eye-catching with bold electric blues like the ones in this Technic Electric Eyes Palette, channel sophisticated Seventies style with the shimmery metallic blues in this Technic Colourmax Bakes Boogie Nights Palette, or tone it down with the more subtle smoky navies in the W7 Cosmetics In The Night Up In Smoke Palette.
If the idea of blue eyeshadow give you the blues, you might prefer this season’s trend for long and fluttering lashes instead. The SS16 catwalks were awash with doe-eyed models sporting the lengthiest lashes, some even clumpy or spidery – basically, the more dramatic the better. To get the look, you want to set aside your volumising mascara in favour of one that’s much more lengthening (we love L’Oreal Paris’ False Lash Telescopic Mascara). Either that or you can use false lashes, we won’t tell anyone.
The Lips
This season, there are really only two standout lip trends to choose from so it’s time to pick your side; are you #TeamRed or #TeamGoth? If you’re Team Red, you’ll be opting for the pretty-yet-sophisticated matte red lips that were everywhere on the SS16 runways. More of a classic apple red than a bold bright, this is a romantic look made chic by a matte finish.
If you’re Team Goth however, you’ll be rocking berry-stained lips in deep plums and blue-purples – the perfect cool-girl antidote to boring spring florals and pastels.
