Ladies, are you looking for a show-stopping, smoulderingly sexy look for the upcoming party season? If so, whip out your eyeshadow palette, it’s time to don a smoky eye. It’s a classic look that never goes out of style, plus it suits everybody.
Here’s our step-by-step guide for creating the PERFECT smoky eye every time –
Step one) Skip the foundation (for now):
Ditch your usual makeup routine. We’re going to skip the base layer and go straight for the eyes. You can apply your base/foundation afterwards, after cleaning up any flecks of dark eyeshadow that have fallen on to your cheeks.
Top tip: If you’re using concealer underneath your eye, remember to blend it with any eyeliner or power from the lower lash line. Smudge everything together nicely, otherwise your make up will look patchy.
Step two) Priming your eyelids
Start by applying a little primer over your eyelids. This will ensure your eyeshadow stays in place all evening.
Step three) Add the shadow
Create a base layer of taupe (or light grey) powder on your lids. Use a large brush to soften the powder – we’re aiming for a soft, light layer to begin with.
Next, add a darker shade to the outside corners of your lids and blend inwards using a big fat brush to keep the edges soft. Opt for either a midnight black or gunmetal grey colour.
Use a shimmering highlight pencil along your brow bone for a professional finish. This will really open up your eye area.
Step four) Apply eyeliner
Trace your upper and lower lash lines using a black or grey kohl eye pencil. Gently smudge the line with a brush for a real sultry look.
Top tip: Hold a compact mirror downwards as trace along your upper lashes, this will be a lot easier than looking at yourself square-on in the mirror.
5) Seriously sexy lashes
Big, black and dramatic lashes really compliment a smoky eye – they finish the look off perfectly. Either use an eyelash curler and apply lashings of mascara, or wear a pair of falsies.
6) Don’t forget your brows!
Tidy your brows as usual, but ditch the pencil. Heavy brows will ruin the look. Keep yours looking soft and natural.
7) For the rest of your face:
Avoid a stark, gothic look by adding a hint of blusher to your cheeks. For a thoroughly modern look, finish with a nude lipstick.
Alternatively, vamp up with look with a little glitter and a sultry red lip.
