Lazy girls rejoice! Just when we thought summer’s ‘Polished Princess’ look was here to stay, our ultimate favourite messy hairdo stormed back onto the scene with a bang (or with bangs, if you’re fringe-inclined). Please, kindly welcome back: The Topknot.
Don’t you mean a man bun?
How dare you. Us ladies were rocking a chic topknot long before any hipster boy or Instagram hottie.
Okay, okay. What is it?
The perfect topknot is a tousled bun that should sit right at the crown of your head and should be anything but polished. The ideal vibe is ‘I just whipped this up in seconds’ but actually might take a while to find the perfect balance between mussed up and just plain messy.
Sounds good! How do I get one?
First things first, this style doesn’t work well with freshly-washed hair, which can slip too easily out of place. For the best results, work with hair that hasn’t been washed for a day or two. If yours looks a little greasy, spritz it with dry shampoo. Not only will this freshen up your hair, it’ll also give your locks a bit more hold.
Secondly, you’re going to want perfectly tousled tresses to nail the pretty:messy ratio. Invest in a good texturising spray or salt spray to give your hair natural wave and volume.
When you’re all prepped and ready to go, tip your head upside down and spritz it with hairspray for extra hold. Gather your hair into a bundle (or wrap/twist it into a bun, whatever works best for you) then secure it with a bobble or hair grips.
Help! My hair is too thin!
If you haven’t got enough hair to make up a full knot or bun, don’t worry, use a bun ring instead! This nifty little tool is designed to give you volume where volume ain’t. Simply pull your hair into a high ponytail, pull your hair through the bun ring until the ring sits at the base of your ponytail then spread your hair out over the ring and pin it in. Instant va-va-voom!
