With the sixties, seventies and eighties all back in fashion, we can think of only one accessory a fashionista needs to finish off every outfit and that’s a totally voluminous mane. Whether you love bouncy curls, backcombed beehives or pretty perms, big hair is where its at and we can help you achieve it.
Curly Girls
A head of bouncy tumbling curls is absolutely key to any seventies look but keeping them fresh and volumised all day can be difficult. First things first, it’s important to prep your hair for long-lasting style. Start with a curl-enhancing shampoo like L’Oreal’s Expert Curl Contour Shampoo then prep with a strong-holding curl mousse like TIGI Bedhead Extreme Curl Mousse. Make sure your hair is dry and then style; seventies curls are all about size and volume so, if you’re using tongs, try to use ones with a big barrel like Babyliss Pro’s Titanium Expression Curling Tong in 38mm. If you don’t have the patience to curl your hair section by section, you can always curl it overnight by putting it up in some barrel rollers – these 70mm red cling rollers are a good size for achieving voluminous curls. Finish off with a volumising enhancer like TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock Amplifier and you’ll be left with a big and bouncy barnet that lasts all day.
Backcombed Babes
Whether you’re a rock chick or an eighties-lover, there’s no greater way of achieving rough and ready volume like a good backcomb. Be careful though, get the technique wrong and you could end with damaged hair and a bird’s nest worthy of a certain loquacious lothario. Start out with dry – preferably day old – hair and douse it in a thickening or volumising hairspray like Goldwell Style Sign Big Finish. Then carefully separate the hair into sections around the crown and use a tail comb to backcomb the underside of each section from the scalp up. Yes, you heard that correctly! While loads of stylistas can be seen in the ladies’ backcombing the tips of their hair, this is a recipe for a tangled disaster. Backcombing from the roots will give you guaranteed volume minus the mess. Finish with a spritz of strong-hold hairspray and your rock’n’roll do will be able to party longer than you can.
