Sweaty skin, running mascara, smeared lipstick — summer is a nightmare for makeup fans. Don’t get us wrong, we love, love, love the hot weather, just not when we’ve got a faceful of slap. But if you’ve got a big summer event coming up, or just hate leaving the house bare-faced, you’re going to need to know how to create a summery makeup look that lasts.
Daytime
One of the worst things about summer makeup is the dreaded slide, when you find that all that foundation and blusher has started to slide off your face after just a few hours in the heat. If you’re going to be out in the sun, the first summer-ready tip you need to bear in mind is to stay as natural as possible. Heavy foundations do not fare well in high temperatures nor will they do your complexion any favours when your pores open up in the heat. If you can’t bear to go bare, try at least to wear a lighter tinted moisturiser that won’t feel so heavy on your skin. If you tend to suffer from a sweaty or oily face, you can even opt for a compact powder foundation over a cream one to stave off shine throughout the day. The rest of your daytime look should be kept just as light; choose pretty pink blushers or a shimmery summery bronzer for a golden glow paired with a clear mascara and a subtle gloss on the lips.

Beachtime
Of course it’s likely that, at some point over the summer, you’ll be beachside or poolside. Wearing makeup while sunbathing is never a good idea but this can cause problems for those of us who feel insecure about our complexions. Instead of layering on makeup to go to the beach, why not fake tan instead? A bronzed skin tone will camouflage any imperfections or blemishes, leaving you feeling confident enough to strut your stuff on the beach. That’s not to say you have to go completely make-up free though. If you want to look like a glam beach goddess, why not invest in a great waterproof mascara for a high-definition yet beach-ready look. Last but not least, finish off with a slick of SPF lip balm to protect that pout.

Nighttime
After all that fresh-faced beauty, you’re going to want to up your makeup game for (a-ha) those summer nights. The key here is to perfect an evening look that won’t have relocated itself all over your face after a particularly scorching dancefloor session. Our suggestion is go to smoky all the way. A well-defined liquid or gel eye line just isn’t going to last in a hot club so grab your favourite kohl eyeliner and go for a classic smoky eye. Not only does this look perfect for a hot summer night out, it’s a case of ‘the smudgier the better’ for this style so your makeup will look on point even if it’s started to smudge a little.
