With straighteners, hair dryers, curling tongs, curling wands and curling irons all seemingly key to most of our favourite hairstyles, it’s a wonder we have any hair left. If you’re starting to notice the signs of hair damage from using heated tools then it might be time to give your hair a break before it has a breakdown.
Before you start panicking though, don’t worry; giving your hair some time off doesn’t mean you have to go out into the great wide world with a birds’ nest atop your head. Some of the most beautiful hairstyles you can think of can be achieved with no heat whatsoever. Magic!
Here are some of our favourites:
Overnight Curls – Achieving perfectly bouncy curls doesn’t always require the use of hair tongs. Next time you want to head out with vintage curls worthy of a Hollywood red carpet, simply start your prep the night before. Apply some anti-frizz products to your locks to make sure your curls are luscious, then place an elasticated head band over the top of your hair (think hippie-style). Then all you have to do is start wrapping your hair around the band starting from the front on one side all the way round to the other. When you’re finished, hop into bed and you should wake up with a perfect head of curls once you remove the band in the morning. Easy!
Beach Waves – The perfect look for summer, beach waves look glam without appearing too ‘done’. While they can be quickly achieved with a curling wand, there’s no need to frazzle your hair to nail this style. Instead, pick up a great salt spray (we love REF’s Ocean Mist) and spritz it over your locks before popping them into a loose braid. When undone, your hair should fall into perfectly natural waves.
Eighties Crimp – Crimping isn’t just for Jerome and Brett, this classic Eighties cool girl style is creeping back into fashion for us too. Before you go to buy that heated crimper though, try out this easy heatless styling tip. Similar to our beach waves tutorial, crimps can be easily achieved with braids but the plait needs to be a lot tighter this time. Plait your hair into lots of thin braids before you go to bed and you’ll wake up with a perfectly crimped barnet.
Ringlets – If loose curls aren’t your thing, you’ll love this easy method for achieving cute pinwheel curls. Wash your hair and leave it to dry until it feels just damp to the touch. Then section off your hair into small pieces and twist each piece until it naturally starts to coil up towards your scalp. Once fully coiled, pin the section of hair up with bobby pins. Leave in for a few hours (or until your hair is fully dry) then unpin the sections to reveal gorgeous tight curls. Top tip: you might need a bit of hairspray to hold the style for this one!
